Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks

Another week out of the showring and another week where I turn my handling skills to another form of dogs sports. Last weekend it was herding, this weekend it is obedience. This was extra special too because my husband, Damian is finally having a 'crack' at a dog sport.

Benni and Fleur both started the seven week beginners obedience course today. There is no doubt Fleur (and Damian) are going to be the superstars of the class. Fleur is super motivated and trained really well today, picking up each new command really quickly. This was exciting for Damian who has never done any dog sports before, and he enjoyed being able to forge a working relationship with her. I think Fleur's future is certainly in the performance arena. Maybe Damian will decide to do Rally O?

Benni is less motivated, but his absolutely beautiful personality means he wants to please, so he also did well. I want to do this basic level of training with him before we begin to do Tracking and other endurance based sports.

Next weekend we will be back in the show ring on Saturday before heading to week 2 of obedience on Sunday.
